This pretty genus is commonly known as pansy orchid and contains around 5 species, primarily from Colombia and Ecuador. They are low-growing clump-forming plants with pale green strap-like leaves that grow from a fleshy bulblike stem. The flowers grow in small clusters and generally appear in late spring. The large, flat, almost circular flowers have vivid markings reminiscent of pansies and are extremely colorful, blooming in shades of bright yellow, white, red, and pink, often with god, pruple, or brown blotches or streaks. A number of decorative hybrids have been cultivated for garden use and can look spectacular when grown in small pots.
CULTIVATION
The plants do bet in open compost and light shade. They can grow outdoors in tropical and subtropical climates but need to be kept in a greenhouse if the climate is cooler. Pot-grown Miltoniopsis plants will grow well in sphagnum moss. Propagate by division after flowering.
Top Tip
These gorgeous plants will reward with flowers in dazzling strong color, with some flowering twice in a season. They dislike direct sunlight, preferring shady humid conditions.
