This genus is one of several genera known as ice plants. It contains about 150 species of annuals, perennials, and subshrubs found throughout southern and eastern Africa. Species are generally drought tolerant and are excellent for desert gardens. They have dense yellow-green foliage that is made up of small, fleshy, and usually cylindrical leaves growing in opposite pairs on the stem. During spring and summer, the daisy-like flowers are borne in vivid shades of white, yellow, orange-red, and bright magenta, with the result that the spreading species form boldly-colored carpets of blooms. Several species have been used in herbal and traditional medicines, and recent studies show that they contain fairly high concentrations of a mildly hallucinogenic drug (dimethyltryptamine).
CULTIVATION
Delosperma species prefer full sun in a sheltered spot with light, gritty, well-drained soil. They are ideally suited for coastal areas and rockeries. A few species will tolerate light frosts. Propagate from seed or cuttings.
Top Tip
These hardy southern African species will perform best if water is withheld during autumn, allowing the plants to harden off for winter. During the growing period, water regularly, applying fertilizer every 3 weeks.
