This genus of 19 species of annuals and perennials is a member of the poppy family (Papaveraceae). Naturally occurring across temperate Asian and North American habitats, it is commonly referred to as bleeding heart-a reference to the shape and color of its pendulous flowers. Apart from red and purple, flowers occur in shades of white, pink, and yellow, hanging gracefully from upright or slightly arching stems. This clump-forming genus has gay-green to blue-green fern-like foliage. Many species have unusually shaped flowers that lend themselves to a wide variety of common names such as lady's locket and Dutchman's breeches. The slightly ominous name, stagger weed, refers to the effect the foliage has on animals that graze on the plant.
