DEUTZIA

This genus consists of around 60 species of deciduous and evergreen shrubs from temperate Asia and Central America. The pale green leaves range from ovel-pointed to lance shaped, often with serrated edges, and grow in opposite pairs on the stem.Most of the commonaly growns spicies are spring are spring-flowering with the small 5-petalled flowers growing in a profusion of clustered sprays that reach above the foliage. The flowers are usually white or pink and may be scented. These plants are ideal for a mixed shrub border; the peeling brak of certain spicies also adds to thier interest.


CULTIVATION


Most Deutzia species are frost hardy, preferring fertile soil, a sheltered position, and sun during the day. Pruning after flowering will maintain a framework of strong branches. Propagate from seed or half-hardened summer cuttings.


Top Tip


This graceful and ornamental genus is widely cultivated and is a mainstay of temperate gardens due to its frost-hardy nature. All are suitable for a shrub border or as specimen plants.
